Energy Express Project

The Energy Express Project, developed by Seven States Power Corporation in partnership with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), is bringing next-generation resources to the Greater Memphis region. This project will enhance the American workforce, create energy efficiency and carbon reduction, and deliver reliable, abundant, and affordable energy to the grid. As we advance this important initiative, we invite residents, stakeholders, and community partners to share their questions, ideas, and feedback through our online project platform below. Your input is vital in helping shape an energy future that reflects the needs and values of the Memphis community.

Project Details

Building and Energizing the Grid of the Future.

The Energy Express Project is a clean energy initiative from Seven States Power Corporation, developed in partnership with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), to deliver a more reliable, abundant, and affordable energy future for the Greater Memphis region. This project will deploy approximately 110MW of solar power and 100MW of battery energy storage. The solar array will provide enough clean electricity to power up to 22,000 homes annually while the battery energy storage will supply enough to power up to 10,000 average homes for approximately 8 hours. By combining large-scale renewable generation with advanced storage, Energy Express will strengthen grid reliability and create new workforce and economic opportunities across West Tennessee. Together, Seven States and MLGW are building and energizing a more modern system that benefits local communities today and for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Energy Express Project?

The Energy Express Project is a utility-scale energy initiative developed by Seven States Power Corporation in partnership with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW). It will deliver approximately 110MW of solar generation and 100MW of battery storage, helping provide clean, reliable, and affordable power to the Greater Memphis region.

  • Where will the project be built?

The project will be built across roughly 630 acres in the Memphis area, carefully selected to balance grid accessibility, land use, and environmental considerations. The site will be designed to minimize community disruption and maximize long-term local benefit.

  • How will this project benefit Memphis and local communities?

The project will benefit the Greater Memphis area by:

    • Enhancing the American workforce by creating up to 100 construction and engineering jobs and sourcing. domestically manufactured products
    • Creating energy efficiency and carbon reduction for the surrounding land through greenhouse gas reduction targets.
    • Delivering reliable, abundant, and affordable enrgy that will modernize the existing electric grid.
    • Providing the lowest cost financing awarded to the Tennessee Valley for new generation.

  • How is the Energy Express Project being financed?

The Energy Express Project is being financed through a $439 Million award from the USDA New ERA Program, which includes a $415 Million 0% interest loan and $24 Million in no-match grant funding. This federal investment significantly lowers the overall cost of the project, enabling Seven States and MLGW to deliver clean, reliable solar and battery storage resources to the Memphis region without placing additional financial burden on local ratepayers.

  • What will be the environmental impact?

The Energy Express Project will help cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing dependence on peaking fossil fuel plants.  Cleaner air and fewer emissions will improve public health and environmental quality in nearby neighborhoods and across West Tennessee.

  • How will the solar and battery systems work together?

The solar array will generate electricity during daylight hours, while the battery energy storage system will store excess power and release it when demand peaks — such as in the evening or during outages. This combination improves grid efficiency, and ensures a steady supply of clean energy.

  • Who are the partners on the project?

The Energy Express Project is a collaborative effort led by Seven States Power Corporation in partnership with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW). Seven States will develop, own, and operate the solar and battery storage facilities, while MLGW serves as the local utility partner ensuring the clean energy produced directly supports customers across the Greater Memphis region. The project is also supported by the USDA New Empowering Rural America Program, whose financial backing makes this large-scale renewable energy investment possible for the community.

  • How can community members stay informed or provide feedback?

Seven States Power Corporation will maintain an online project platform with regular updates, construction milestones, and a contact form for questions or feedback (below). This ensures transparent communication and gives residents a direct channel to engage with project leaders throughout development and operation.
